Patrick Viera

Viera, Patrick
1 PRESENTATION

Viera, Patrick ( 1976 -), French footballer, midfielder, twice winner of the 1998 World Cup and European Championship of Nations in 2000.

2 FIRST STEPS: AS Cannes

Born in Dakar (Senegal), Patrick Vieira began his professional career in 1993 at AS Cannes, with whom he played his first game in First Division (D1) of France Championship and its first European meetings in the framework of the UEFA Cup ( see European Cups). In November 1995 he left France and sign for one of the most prestigious courses in Europe, AC Milan, he played there only two games but won the championship in Italy in 1996.

3 REVELATION IN ENGLAND ARSENAL FC

Disappointed by the experience during which he can not express the fullness of his talent, Patrick Vieira then turned to the Premiership (Premier League) by integrating the workforce of Arsenal FC. With an athletic physique and powerful and excellent technical qualities, it is fast becoming a midfield both recovery and able to distribute the game during the phases of attack. Enjoying the confidence of Arsene Wenger, his trainer, Patrick Viera is one of the undisputed owners of the team, alongside Emmanuel Petit in particular, but also forwards Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry and Sylvain Wiltord.

In 1998, he contributed to the success of training and conducts the London double-Championship FA Cup. In 2000 he reached the final of the UEFA Cup, but Arsenal are beaten on penalties by the Turkish team Galatasaray. The following year he was a finalist in the FA Cup for the second time in his career. In 2001-2002, Patrick Viera and Gunners Arsenal reissued the feat of 1998 by winning a second double in five seasons.

Only "gray area" in the brilliant record of Patrick Viera is the lack of victory in the European Cup, and more specifically the prestigious Champions League (only title ever won by Arsenal FC).

4 PATRICK VIERA AND THE TASK OF FRANCE

Patrick Viera is named in the France team for the first time in February 1997 during a match against the Netherlands. Holder of 56 caps in June 2002, he has also scored 3 goals in the tricolor jersey. Chosen by Aime Jacquet locum tenens Zinedine Zidane during the World Cup 1998, he was with authority and control the midfield role when the latter is suspended for three games following a foul committed against A player from Saudi Arabia, Patrick Viera then obtained his first patent of nobility in the France team, gaining credibility with the coach and won the world title with his teammates. In 2000, he won the European Nations Championship in 2001 and the Confederations Cup.

Holder indisputable, Patrick Viera has become one of the "framework" of the national team, a key element of the system set up by Roger Lemerre for the 2002 World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. However, lacking fitness after a particularly trying season, he can as usual influence on the game in a France team that is powerless to leave the competition in the first round.
