Born in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime), Emmanuel Petit began his professional career at AS Monaco in 1989 for his first season at the highest level (First Division Championship in France, now League 1 2002), he played 9 games and participates in the final of the Coupe de France lost against Olympique Marseille. But he won this race two years later. The following year, in 1992 he added a line to his record by playing the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup (now defunct), AS Monaco is beaten by the Germans Werder Bremen.
Emmanuel Petit changes during nine seasons in the formation of Monaco, where he meets including forwards Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, with whom he won the championship of France in 1997 under the direction of Coach Arsene Wenger.

an effort to bring an international dimension to his career, Emmanuel Petit joined the club from Arsenal FC at the beginning of the 1997-1998 season. Alongside Nicolas Anelka in particular, he made a double-England Championship FA Cup in his first season outside France. In 2000, he succeeded again in the finals of a European Cup, the UEFA Cup, but Arsenal FC bows against the Turks Galatasaray.
In 2000, Emmanuel Petit joined the prestigious FC Barcelona, but the experience proved disappointing and he changes club the following year. He then joined the staff of Chelsea FC, playing in London training Prime League (First Division Championship of England) and Marcel Desailly has in its ranks. The balance of 2001-2002 season and 2002-2003 is positive overall because, despite his wounds, Emmanuel Petit is one of the undisputed owners of the team, a finalist in the FA Cup in 2002 and 4 th championship in 2003. The following year, still regularly injured, he played just a few games. Without a club at the beginning of the 2004-2005 season, however he trains in the number of Arsenal FC, but in January 2005, he officially ended his professional career.

Emmanuel Petit is selected for the first time a team from France by Michel Platini in 1990 during a match between France and Poland. Holder 63 times, he scored 6 goals in the tricolor jersey.

Emmanuel Petit participates in Euro 96 - France is eliminated in the semifinals by the Czech Republic - and then to the 1998 edition of the World Cup held in France. Key element of the system implemented by coach Aime Jacquet, he played alongside Patrick Vieira and Didier Deschamps in midfield, and produces a brilliant competition concluded with a goal in the final victory against Brazil.

Again this for the European Championship of Nations in 2000 won by France, Emmanuel Petit is among the players regularly called for France by Roger Lemerre for the finals of the Cup 2002 World held in South Korea and Japan, however, like his teammates, he fails to evolve at the level of game that is usually his own, and the France team is eliminated from the surprise the first round of the competition.
The arrival of a new coach (Jacques Santini) in the aftermath of this failure at once personal and collective challenges the role of Emmanuel Petit in the formation tricolor he left the team to France in September 2003.
