Riva, Luigi (1944 -), Italian football player, left winger or striker, who holds the record for most goals scored for his country.
Luigi Riva was born in Leggiuno (Lombardy). He performs his entire career in Italy in the club Cagliari (Sardinia). From 1963 to 1976, he played 286 games in Italian first division and scored 156 goals for his club. Italian champion in 1970, top scorer in 1967 (18 goals), 1969 (20 goals) and 1970 (21 goals), idol of Sardinia, Luigi Riva could never play in a major Italian clubs, the Sardinian club's fans had always opposed the transfer. He was selected 42 times and scored 35 goals for the Italian national team, with whom he won the European Nations Championship in 1968, along with Dino Zoff and Sandro Mazzola. He was a finalist with Gianni Rivera of the World Cup in 1970 before the Brazil of Pele, after scoring a goal in the semifinal played outstanding against the team of the Federal Republic of Germany Franz Beckenbauer and 'Uwe Seeler.
