Born in Reims (Marne), Robert Pires began his professional career in 1991 with his hometown club, which then evolves in the Third Division (now called "National"). Transferred to FC Metz in the following year, he held the position of midfielder. Season after season (6 in all), it is under the direction of coach Joel Muller one of the key elements of the training device Metz. In 1998, he contributed largely to the exceptional course of his championship team in France: the club finished in 2 e place overall behind RC Lens at the end of an exciting crossover and thus obtains his "ticket" for the prestigious Champions League (see European Cups).

Retained by Aime Jacquet for the finals of the 1998 World Cup held in France, Robert Pires replacing most of the time.
